Holistically developing the next generation of leaders to change the game in Higher Education and beyond.
What We Do
We are a multi-award-winning social enterprise grounded in both research and lived experience.
We do this through leadership development programmes, community engagement training, research and consultancy. Our flagship programme focuses explicitly on closing the Ethnicity Awarding Gap as experienced by Black students through our end-to-end supplementary programming to improve student outcomes, experiences and job prospects.
How We Began
How We Began
The idea was simple: “Create for the most underserved or complex meeting of inequalities, and you should be covering ground for everyone thereafter”
Jessica Agboola, Director of KINSIS
KINSIS was founded by Jessica Agboola, a researcher-entrepreneur dedicated to transforming higher education and wider society to be more inclusive, equitable, and impactful. After experiencing firsthand the challenges faced by Black students in UK higher education, and narrowly skipping the awarding gap alongside supporting others from experiencing the same, Jessica leveraged these barriers as a catalyst for change.
Graduating with a 1st class degree, she went on to pursue international research projects, build mission-driven partnerships, and design culturally relevant programmes and communities. What began as a student-led concern in 2014 was, in fact, the early identification of a much deeper, systemic issue affecting students and the sector at large.
The idea was simple: “Create for the most underserved or complex meeting of inequalities, and you should be covering ground for everyone thereafter” (Agboola, 2019)
Our work began with the Black Women’s Project (BWP), a student-led community founded to support Black women and girls navigating the complexities of higher education. As the UK’s first SU-recognised society for Black women, the initiative quickly gained steam and now has a national presence. What began as community building led to the development of KINSIS’ flagship programmes, specifically designed to cultivate their leadership potential and increase their sense of belonging.
Our inaugural programme, the Holistic Leadership Academy™, rooted in Black girl leadership methodologies, has delivered significantly improved outcomes and experiences for the students who have participated in it.
Through continued research and co-design with other students, KINSIS has broadened its scope via the KIN Programme, to underserved communities across UK higher education institutions.to improve student outcomes, experiences and job prospects.
Today, KINSIS is an organisation that works with students navigating various structural barriers by delivering student-centred development programs that improve their experiences, outcomes, and future prospects.
Our solution is multidimensional, because the problem is.
Leveraging 10+ years of community-building and research, we level the playing field in a few ways.
Leadership
Leadership development, timely support, and holistic development to improve outcomes for students.
Wellbeing
Culturally relevant wellbeing and therapeutic support: Addressing the unique needs of Black students.
Staff Training
Driving real, sustainable institutional change.
Student Voice
Research rooted in lived experience and student voice, shaping policies that affect the student experience.
At KINSIS, our work is powered by people who lead with care, insight and lived experience.
From programme facilitators and researchers to community organisers and advisors, our team brings together a unique mix of expertise from higher education, policy, youth development and beyond. Many of us have walked the same paths as the students we now support, and that’s what makes our approach different.

After finding her sisterhood through the BWP at Warwick, she wants to create opportunities for other Black women to also find their tribe and reap the benefits of such a robust and supportive network at any stage of their lives. Thandi loves bringing people together over food (which, we must say, she does sensationally), but when she is not the hostess with the mostest, she enjoys reformer pilates, trying out new recipes and exploring all things fashion and interior design.
